Standard bass tuning is E A D G — the same as the four lowest guitar strings, one octave down. It's the foundation for virtually all bass playing, from Motown to metal.
Bass frequencies are low (the open E is 41 Hz), so give the tuner a clean, moderate pluck near the neck and let the needle settle. Playing the 12th-fret harmonic also works well and can read more steadily than the open string.
